Asia stocks stutter as Japan confidence falls

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets stuttered Friday after a survey showed a sharp drop in Japanese business confidence and a lack of progress in U.S. budget negotiations intensified fears that the world's largest economy faces a new recession.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to 9,706.50 after a Bank of Japan survey showed large Japanese manufacturers becoming more pessimistic about business conditions. The index in three months to December dropped from September's minus three to minus 12, much worse than expected.

The survey suggested than an economic recovery might come even later than the central bank is currently envisaging, said Yoshiro Sato of Credit Agricole CIB in a market commentary.

South Korea's Kospi fell 0.6 percent to 1,989.66. Benchmarks in Singapore and Taiwan also fell. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.3 percent to 22,519.7 and Australia's S&P/ASX added 0.1 percent to 4,588.90.

Among individual stocks, Japan's Fujitsu Ltd. surged 5.5 percent and Sharp Corp. jumped 5.2 percent.

Wall Street stocks slid Thursday after investors registered their dismay at an apparent lack of progress during budget talks in Washington between President Barack Obama and key Republican lawmakers.

A deal must be reached by the end of the year to avoid what has been dubbed the "fiscal cliff" ? hundreds of billions of dollars in automatic spending cuts and tax increases that could plunge the world's largest economy back into recession.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.6 percent to 13,170.72. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.6 percent to 1,419.45. The Nasdaq composite index fell 0.7 percent to 2,992.16.

The decline in stocks came despite the fourth straight weekly drop in applications for unemployment benefits. Applications fell 29,000 last week to 343,000, the second-lowest this year, the Labor Department reported.

Benchmark crude was up 36 cents to $86.25 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract lost 88 cents to end at $85.89 per barrel in New York on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro was nearly unchanged at $1.3076 from $1.3075 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 83.68 yen from 83.17 yen.

Venezuela furious at Obama's comments on ailing Chavez

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's government reacted with fury on Friday to U.S. President Barack Obama's criticism of ailing Hugo Chavez's "authoritarian" government at a time of national anxiety over his battle to recover from cancer surgery.

In an interview with U.S. network Univision, Obama declined to speculate on the 58-year-old socialist president's health in Cuba, where he is in a delicate state after his fourth operation since mid-2011 for cancer in the pelvic region.

But he did say U.S. policy was aimed at ensuring "freedom" in Venezuela. "The most important thing is to remember that the future of Venezuela should be in the hands of the Venezuelan people. We've seen from Chavez in the past authoritarian policies, suppression of dissent," Obama told Univision.

Those remarks were a red cloth to officials in Caracas where emotions are running high over the future of Chavez and his self-styled revolution in the South American OPEC nation.

In power since 1999, Chavez is due to start a new six-year term on January 10 after winning re-election just weeks before Obama did. His health crisis has thrown that into doubt, and Chavez has named a successor in case he is incapacitated.

"With these despicable comments at such a delicate moment for Venezuela, the U.S. president is responsible for a major deterioration in bilateral relations, proving the continuity of his policy of aggression and disrespect towards our country," the Venezuelan government said in a statement.

CASTRO'S HEIR

During his tumultuous 14-year rule, Chavez has taken former Cuban leader Fidel Castro's mantle as the U.S. government's main irritant in the region - though oil has continued to flow freely north to the benefit of both nations' economies.

Adored by poor supporters for his charismatic style and channeling of Venezuela's oil resources into a wide array of welfare projects, Chavez is regarded as a dictator by opponents who point to his often harsh treatment of political foes.

Officials said doctors had to use "corrective measures" to stop unexpected bleeding caused during Tuesday's six-hour surgery on Chavez, but his condition had since improved.

A medical update was due later on Friday.

Chavez's situation is being closely tracked around the region, especially among fellow leftist-run nations from Cuba to Bolivia who depend on his generous oil subsidies and other aid for their fragile economies.

"The president is battling hard - this time for his life, before it was for the Latin American fatherland," said President Evo Morales of Bolivia, a Chavez friend and ally who announced he was flying to Havana overnight for an "emergency" visit.

"This is very painful for us."

SPECULATION

Chavez has not divulged details of the cancer that was first diagnosed in June 2011, sparking endless speculation among Venezuela's 29 million people and criticism from opposition leaders for lack of transparency.

"They're hiding something, I think," said Venezuelan housewife Alicia Marquina, 57. "I'm not convinced by the announcements they're making. I'm not a 'chavista', but neither am I cruel, I hope he does not suffer much and finds peace."

If Chavez has to leave office, new elections must be held within 30 days. Chavez has named his vice president, Nicolas Maduro, a 50-year-old former bus driver and union leader, as his heir apparent.

Opposition flagbearer Henrique Capriles, who lost the presidential race against Chavez in October, is the favorite to face Maduro should a new vote be held, though first the governor of Miranda must retain his post in local elections on Sunday.

"The regime change is already occurring," Jefferies' managing director Siobhan Morden said in one of numerous Wall Street analyses of events in Venezuela. "The question is whether the alternative is Chavista-light or the opposition."

Even if he dies, Chavez is likely to cast a long shadow over Venezuela's political landscape for years - not unlike Argentine leader Juan Peron, whose 1950s populism is still the ideological foundation of the country's dominant political party.

There are parallels with Cuba too, where Chavez's friend and mentor, Fidel Castro, suffered a health downturn, underwent various operations in secret, and eventually handed over to his brother Raul Castro.

Explosion targets Syrian Interior Ministry building in Damascus, state TV says

BEIRUT - An explosion targeted the Syrian Interior Ministry building Wednesday in the capital, Damascus, state TV said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad have been making inroads in their advance toward Damascus, the seat of the government, in recent weeks. Fighting has intensified in the southern districts of the Syrian capital and its suburbs.

The conflict started nearly 21 months ago as an uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. It quickly morphed into a civil war, with rebels taking up arms to fight back against a bloody crackdown by the government.

According to activists, more than 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

Rebels have targeted the centre of Damascus with bomb attacks in the past, most dramatically in July when they detonated explosives inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defence minister.

An al-Qaida linked group, Jabhat al-Nusra, has claimed many deadly blasts inside Syria.

On the political front, more than 100 countries recognized a new opposition coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people during an international meeting being held in Morocco. The U.S. also has declared the coalition is the "legitimate representative" of its country's people. The moves open the way for greater humanitarian assistance to the forces battling Assad and possibly even military aid.

But the presence of extremist groups among the rebel forces has raised concerns in the U.S. and other nations that are supporting the opposition in Syria but do not want to see extremists gain power in the region. The U.S. has blacklisted Jabhat al-Nusra ? Arabic for Victory Front ? as a foreign terrorist organization and said the group was part of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Al-Nusra fighters appear to be among the most effective fighting forces on the rebel side, spearheading many recent gains.

Resurrection of extinct enzymes reveals evolutionary strategy for the invention of new functions

Resurrection of extinct enzymes reveals evolutionary strategy for the invention of new functions

How does evolution innovate? We exist because our ancestors have had the ability to adapt successfully to changes in their environment; however, merely examining present-day organisms can limit our understanding of the actual evolutionary processes because the crucial events have been masked by the passage of aeons ? what we need is a time machine. Scientists from VIB, KU Leuven, University of Ghent and Harvard have done the next-best thing; by reconstructing DNA and proteins from prehistoric yeast cells, they were able to directly examine the evolutionary forces that have acted over the last 100 million years to shape modern-day enzymes ? biological catalysts that enable organisms to manipulate molecules to their will.

The scientists set out to explore how new genes emerge, how they contribute to the survival of the evolving organism, and how, after a humble start, evolution then refines the function of new genes and hones the efficiency of the enzymes that they encode. One of the richest sources of such new genes is the chance duplication of existing genes. One copy of the gene can then continue to encode the original enzyme, allowing it to perform its original task, while the other is free to change and to perhaps take on a new function; alternatively, the two new enzymes might sub-divide the original task.

Although this pattern of innovation is known to have happened many thousands of times during evolution, the way in which it occurs hasn't been clear. In a paper published December 11 in the online Open Access journal PLOS Biology, Karin Voordeckers, Chris Brown and Kevin Verstrepen from VIB in Leuven, together with Steven Maere from VIB and the University of Ghent, tackled this problem, focusing their attention on the evolution of enzymes that have allowed yeast to exploit changing food sources over the last 100 million years of evolution.

The scientists 'resuscitated' ancestral yeast genes, allowing them to examine the properties of enzymes that existed tens of millions of years ago. The original enzyme originally enabled the yeast cells to survive on a diet of maltose, a common sugar, but duplications of their genes gave rise to new enzymes which opened up the possibility of feeding off other types of sugar in the environment. The resurrection of these enzymes meant that the scientist could build up a detailed picture of their atomic structure and directly determine their ability to break down different types of sugars. Armed with this information, they could work out exactly how the enzymes had changed their specificity and how evolution drove their optimisation.

"We used sequence reconstruction algorithms to predict the DNA sequence of ancestral genes from dozens of present-day DNA sequences. This enabled us to rebuild the corresponding ancestral proteins and compare them with those present today", said Steven Maere.

"We searched very specifically for how the yeast adapted to break down various sources of sugar. We found that the primal gene that codes for the protein for the digestion of maltose ? a sugar in grain ? was copied a number of times during evolution. The DNA of some copies changed slightly, resulting in new proteins that could break down different sugars. By modeling these changes in the corresponding proteins, we now understand how just a few changes in the DNA can lead to the development of a completely new activity in the corresponding proteins", said Karin Voordeckers.

"New functional DNA does not appear out of thin air, but is built up gradually from a copy of an existing segment of functional DNA. By reconstructing a piece of prehistoric DNA that was copied several times during evolution, we were able to investigate in detail which changes occur in each of the copies and gradually lead to new functions. As such, our results provide a unique and detailed view into the molecular details of Darwinian evolution" says Kevin Verstrepen.

The scientists propose that the events observed here in the yeast cell's quest for sugar may reflect a general strategy widely used for innovation in evolution.

Could ending your fatty food habit cause withdrawal symptoms and depression?

Dec. 12, 2012 ? Even before obesity occurs, eating fatty and sugary foods causes chemical changes in the brain, meaning that going on a diet might feel similar to going through drug withdrawal, according to a study published December 12 by Dr. Stephanie Fulton of the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine and its affiliated CRCHUM Hospital Research Centre.

"By working with mice, whose brains are in many ways comparable to our own, we discovered that the neurochemistry of the animals who had been fed a high fat, sugary diet were different from those who had been fed a healthy diet," Fulton explained. "The chemicals changed by the diet are associated with depression. A change of diet then causes withdrawal symptoms and a greater sensitivity to stressful situations, launching a vicious cycle of poor eating."

The research team feed one group of mice a low-fat diet and a high fat diet to a second group over six weeks, monitoring how the different food affected the way the animals behave. Fat represented 11% of the calories in the low-fat diet and 58% in the high-fat diet, causing the waist size in the latter group to increase by 11% -- not yet obese. Next, Fulton and her colleagues use a variety of scientifically validated techniques to evaluate the relationship between rewarding mice with food and their resulting behaviour and emotions. They also actually looked at the brains of the mice to see how they had changed.

Mice that had been fed the higher-fat diet exhibited signs of being anxious, such as an avoidance of open areas. Moreover, their brains have been physically altered by their experiences. One of molecules in the brain that the researchers looked at is dopamine. It enables the brain to rewards us with good feelings, thereby encouraging us to learn certain kinds of behaviour. This chemical is the same in humans as it is in mice and other animals. In turn, CREB is a molecule that controls the activation of genes involved in the functioning of our brains, including those that cause the production of dopamine. It contributes to memory formation. "CREB is much more activated in the brains of higher-fat diet mice and these mice also have higher levels of corticosterone, a hormone that is associated with stress. This explains both the depression and the negative behaviour cycle," Fulton said. "It's interesting that these changes occur before obesity. These findings challenge our understanding of the relationship between diet, the body and the mind. It is food for thought about how we might support people psychologically as they strive to adopt healthy eating habits, regardless of their current corpulence."

Grieving Cowboys beat Bengals 20-19 on FG

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Numb. Grieving. Distracted. The Cowboys were all those things on Sunday, dealing with the death of one teammate and the tribulations of another.

Winners, too, though they hardly felt like it.

Dan Bailey kicked a 40-yard field goal as time ran out, sending the Cowboys to a 20-19 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals that ended a tough afternoon with a little bit of relief and their playoff chances enhanced.

Didn't last long, though. There will be a lot more emotional days ahead in Dallas.

"It's a hard, hard situation we're in," quarterback Tony Romo said. "There's no playbook for this sort of thing in life."

The Cowboys overcame a nine-point deficit in the closing minutes behind Romo, who held his hand over his heart during a moment of silence to honor teammate Jerry Brown before the kickoff. The linebacker died in an auto accident early Saturday.

Defensive lineman Josh Brent, who was driving, was still jailed in Texas on Sunday, charged with intoxication manslaughter.

The Cowboys (7-6) learned about Brown's death on their flight to Cincinnati on Saturday. Coach Jason Garrett told his team that the best way to honor him was to play well in a game with playoff implications for both teams.

One of the visitors' metal lockers at Paul Brown Stadium had a strip of white athletic tape with "53 JERRY BROWN" attached to the top, a wooden stool inside sitting upside-down. Brown's No. 53 jersey was on the sideline during the game ? defensive tackle Jason Hatcher held it up after Bailey's kick decided it.

It wasn't much of a celebration by an emotionally spent team.

"I don't remember crying this much other than maybe the day I was born," defensive lineman Marcus Spears said. "With Josh's situation and Jerry being gone, you felt it."

Players couldn't keep the tragedy out of their thoughts during the game, finding their minds wandering on the bench.

"I rarely let my emotions get the best of me," fullback Lawrence Vickers said. "Today they did, but this was the place to do it."

Owner Jerry Jones described his team as grieving when it took the field. It was the second consecutive week that an NFL team was playing a day after losing a teammate. Kansas City beat Carolina 27-21 one day after linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend and then himself at the Chiefs' practice complex.

When Bailey's kick ended it, the Cowboys had a lot of thoughts racing through their heads.

"The last 24 hours has really been something I've never experienced," Romo said. "It's something I've never experienced, and I think a lot of guys will tell you that. It's just been a roller coaster of emotions.

"It was a very ? and still is ? a very difficult thing that this football team is dealing with."

The Cowboys salvaged the game by scoring on their last two drives against the Bengals (7-6), who had won four in a row and had a chance to move into position for an AFC wild-card berth with a victory.

Romo threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dez Bryant with 6:35 to go. Anthony Spencer's sack of Andy Dalton forced a punt, and Romo completed four passes on the drive to Bailey's winning kick.

Romo finished 25 of 43 for 268 yards with a touchdown, an interception and three sacks. DeMarco Murray converted a third-and-5 play to extend the final drive and ended up with 53 yards on 21 carries.

Newcomer Josh Brown kicked field goals of 25, 33, 25 and 52 yards for Cincinnati, which wasted an opportunity to move ahead of Pittsburgh for the second AFC wild card.

"They came here in an emotional situation, and you knew they were going to fight all the way," Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth said. "That game meant a lot to them. They played great."

Dallas played a sloppy game until the closing minutes ? nothing out of character there ? and had a few especially bad moments.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan went onto the field and yelled at a Bengals player who had said something to the Cowboys bench, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Dallas in the third quarter. Dallas also was penalized for 12 men on the field during the drive, which ended with Brown's third field goal and a 16-10 Cincinnati lead.

In the end, a defense that has allowed only three touchdowns in the last four games couldn't hold on. And the Bengals made it tough on themselves by using all three of their timeouts early in the second half, leaving them unable to stop the clock on Dallas' final drive.

Dalton was 20 of 33 for 206 yards with five sacks, one touchdown and an interception that Brandon Carr returned 37 yards to set up Murray's 1-yard touchdown dive in the second quarter.

NOTES: Bailey's game-winner was his second of the season. His 38-yarder beat Cleveland in overtime. It was Bailey's sixth game-winning FG, second in Cowboys history behind Rafael Septien's seven. ... Bryant caught four passes for 50 yards, leaving him with 1,028 yards for the season. It's his first 1,000-yard receiving season and the first by a Cowboy since 2009 (Miles Austin and Jason Witten). ... Bryant has caught a TD pass in five straight games, the longest streak of his career. ... Romo's 25 completions gave him a club-record 349 for the season. He completed his last 12 throws the previous game and his first five on Sunday, setting a club record with 17 straight completions. ... Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 89 yards on 12 carries, breaking his streak of three straight 100-yard games.

Cheap VOIP CallS To India From USA

It is possible to make cheap VOIP calls to India from the USA. However, doing so will require that you use a carrier set up specifically to make these types of calls.

VOIP carriers are ideal for this type of phone call because they use the internet to relay a persons voice in a digitized form.

The fact that the call is made in digital form makes it much cheaper to send because it is essentially being sent as data as opposed to an analog signal.

Choosing A VOIP Carrier

There are several carriers that you can use to make cheap VIOP calls to India from the USA. However, not all carriers off equivalent levels of service and reliability.

Selecting the right one is paramount to getting cheap and reliable service.

Many VOIP carriers offer a host of services including but not limited to:

  • Distinctive Ringtones ? One thing that always annoys me about getting call is having to get up and see who it is. Distinctive ring tones gives you the ability to know exactly who is calling just by the suond of the ring.
  • Online Call Logs ? Keeping track of who is calling who is a great option that parents love. Online call logs allow you to know who your kids are talking to as well as when and how often.
  • Unlimited Speed Dial ? Have a big family? Set up each number using speed dial and call with more convenience than you ever imagined.

The trick is to just get it, and by it, I mean VOIP.

What Carrier Should I Use?

I personally recommend VOIPo.com. VOIPo.com has a ton of features such as:

Cyprus gets report on bank bailout needs

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cyprus has received a report outlining how much money is needed to bail out its banks, the central bank said on Saturday, helping the island reach a comprehensive aid package with international lenders.

The recapitalization estimate for Greek-exposed Cypriot banks is necessary to secure a bailout deal with lenders representing the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

"The steering committee is looking at the report from this morning, particularly the methodology used to establish the preliminary needs for the recapitalization of the banks," said Central Bank of Cyprus spokeswoman Aliki Stylianou.

The interim report, which comes ahead of a final assessment expected in January, did not contain a figure on the total amount required for the bailout, Stylianou told state radio.

"Some time is required for the steering committee to assess the methodology used to reach a conclusion on the numbers," she said.

The steering committee is made up of representatives from EU institutions, the IMF and Cypriot authorities.

Cyprus, the euro zone's smallest economy after Malta, sought aid from the IMF and the EU after its two largest banks turned to the state for financial assistance.

The banks' regulatory capital was depleted by a writedown on Greek bond holdings in early 2012, the result of a deal brokered by EU leaders to make Greece's debt mountain more manageable.

A rough working assumption for Cyprus's bailout deal has been that the banks need around 10 billion euros to recapitalize, almost 60 percent of Cyprus's entire annual output.

The bailout requirement report was carried out by Pimco, an investment company best known as the world's biggest bond trader.

It involved an asset review of five Cyprus-based banks and a stress test to determine the capital needs of each. It also covered a representative sample of co-operative credit institutions.

Social Media Activism: How Can It Relate To Your Business ...

It is debatable whether activism can be a solely online experience in today?s digital age. Internet activism can be used to mobilize people in real, not virtual, life, but it also sometimes stands alone. With Anonymous, the Occupy movement and other groups using the Internet to organize and carry out their missions, it is obvious that the Internet and social media play some role in modern day activism.

Social media is a forum through which people can get their voices heard. The convenience of this particular forum, though, may cause those who normally would not participate in activism to become a part of the buzz. Not all of these people will venture from behind their computers to attend rallies, sit-ins, etc., but some may become motivated enough to turn their virtual action into real life action.

Some argue that social media and Internet activism cause people to become lazy and less likely to go out and protest. However, others argue that social media is a great platform for protest and activist organization with the flexibility to be secretive or public about announcements. Support shared through tweets during the Arab Spring received a great deal of media attention, either glorifying or denouncing its importance. Social media can be especially helpful in raising consciousness of issues on a local and global level.

How successful is social media at mobilizing people? It is difficult to measure its true impact because it is nearly impossible to keep track of who goes out to protest and who stays behind their computers after tweeting and posting statuses. However, it is possible to measure the amount of people tweeting about certain subjects and the reach of this content across the Internet. It has been done by numbers of scholars analyzing the importance of social media in various political movements. Many of them had to comb through enormous amounts of hash-tagged content, proving in and of itself that social media had a substantial enough impact to warrant research and discussion, while countless new posts and tweets were being created simultaneously.

So, how does this relate to your business? Maybe you are not looking to start a revolution, but you certainly are looking to increase your web presence, traffic and conversion rate. Consider what your business stands for. Are there certain values it operates with? Highlight these values in your posts (without being cheesy), and people with similar beliefs can relate to and empathize with your business. Take a lesson from the activists in how to effectively spread content. Post a message across multiple social media platforms. As a business, your posts will not have the same weight or level of urgency as posts within an activist movement, but you can encourage your followers to?re-post?your content by creating contests or promotions for?re-posting.

Mobilizing people to buy into your business can be tricky, but by consistently and thoroughly posting across social media platforms, you can make your business known to consumers and spark their interest. In the same way that people are inspired by the posts of activists and activist movements, your business?s posts can inspire people to consider your type of business differently, gain a greater respect for your business and ultimately, convert to customers.

Anderson Cooper show to feature Hollywood candy cane parade

Who needs snow and cold weather when you have sand and sun to ring in the holiday season?

Not Anderson Cooper, who chose Hollywood?s 57th annual Candy Cane parade Saturday evening to feature on his daytime show.

?We were looking for a parade that best encompasses the holiday spirt for our ?Anderson Live? holiday show and couldn?t think of a better fit than Hollywood?s Candy Cane Parade,? said executive producer Terence Noonan.

But the man himself won?t be there Saturday night.

Instead Candace Brooks, the audience-member-turned correspondent for the show, will ride in a decked out, vintage 1961 Plymouth Fury and toss candy canes into the crowd.

?She?ll also be reporting on the annual event, interviewing parade participants and viewers,? said the show?s publicist Jessica Fielder.

The show will air at 9 a.m. Dec. 24 on WBFS-Ch. 33.

Brooks, of Houston, was just an animated member of the ?Anderson Live?? audience when she was plucked out and invited to do a cooking demonstration on the show. Since then, ?Anderson Live?? has sent her to Louisiana to cover a gumbo cook-off and Arkansas to go duck hunting.

?I am so excited,? said the bubbly Texas native, who loves the idea of having her toes in the sand. ?I want do everything they let me do.?

Hollywood?s Candy Cane Parade has been a local tradition with more than 25,000 people flocking to the sand for a light-filled holiday extravaganza.

Dozens of floats ? put together by local organizations and businesses ? marching bands and groups will make their way down the Broadwalk at Scott Street and head south to Harrison Street beginning at 7 p.m.

People can put down a blanket, beach chair or use free bleacher seating along the beach.

The city is urging parade-goers to park in garages at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street and take a free shuttle to the beach.

?It?s neat for it to be broadcast to a national audience,? said Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Storey. ?We hope everyone finds it as charming as we do.?

Friday night in the big town: The Nutcracker, crafts, and Trans ...

Well, Christmas is in the air, and I only say this because I?m about to tell about a ton of Christmas activities. No, there isn?t a single Christmas decoration in my home, and I totally bought Halloween Fruit Rollups at Big Lots yesterday. But maybe you?re totally feeling this season. I mean, the weather is about to get cooler and maybe you aren?t on the naughty list. I, myself, have bought some craft supplies for decorating this season and was pleased to find that Big Lots registers don?t make the employees check IDs when you purchase spray paint. Did you hear that, you OKC Metro hooligans? Big Lots has tons of spray paint, and unlike Wal-Mart, they don?t require a parent?s permission. Merry Christmas, you awful taggers who will be drawing genitalia on every building!

Anyway, here?s your Friday Night in the Big Town.

December 7-9: Oklahoma City Ballet presents The Nutcracker

Last year I went to go see The Nutcracker and it was a lot of fun. This was about the fortieth time that I?ve seen the Oklahoma City Ballet perform The Nutcracker, and it?s awesome every time. Last year I enjoyed it so much that I briefly considered taking one of those Barre3 workout classes. That faded really quick, but I still enjoyed the show nonetheless. And, full disclosure, unlike Black Swan, Natalie Portman doesn?t die at the end of any Oklahoma City Ballet performances.

This year, there are a bunch of family activities before and after the shows. You can decorate an ornament in the lobby, get your picture taken with Santa (even though I really want a picture with the Oklahoma City Ballet hippo) and there is even a Braum?s milk and cookies reception with the dancers after the shows. I had a lot of fun last year, and even made plans to steal a cute little kid who played the mouse in the ballet. If you go, I hope you have more luck stealing children.

December 8: Deluxe Indie Craft Bazaar

If you?re like me, then you haven?t even come close to finishing your Christmas shopping. I mean, I did get a pretty sweet Boardwalk Empire-inspired shirt for my dad, but other than that, I?m pretty behind, as is my way every season. I have literally gone to the mall every Christmas Eve since I was 16, and I?ve even stabbed some folks! So, if you?re like me, but think that maybe this is the year to get stuff done early, then may I suggest that you go to the Deluxe Indie Craft Bazaar?

Look, as someone who once received a Ped-egg and OU washcloths as a gift, I can tell you that waiting until the last minute and then running to a major chain store generally means that the gift is going to suck really hard. Why not get some truly unique gifts that are all made here in the great state of Oklahoma? It?s all handmade, and I?m pretty sure you can find something for everyone on your list if you take a look around. And, for those of you who still aren?t swayed, there will apparently be a b-boy battle at this craft fair. Take that, Affair of the Heart!

December 8: Trans-Siberian Orchestra at Chesapeake Arena

There are a few things I hear that scream Christmas to me: My mom?s Frank Sinatra Christmas album, my older brother getting drunk on eggnog and then busting out the Mickey?s Christmas Carols LP of our youth, and my dad humming along to carols and randomly replacing every other word or so with profanity. That?s the Christmas holiday at my house. But those aren?t the only sounds I associate with the season. Any time I hear Trans-Siberian Orchestra, I know it?s the holidays.

The cool thing about Trans-Siberian Orchestra is how dark and epic their sound is. I know that?s a very vague way to describe it, but I?m pretty sure you don?t read FNITBT for my awesome music reviews. Anyway, Trans-Siberian Orchestra reminds me a lot of ?Carol of the Bells? (and not the awful Destiny?s Child version where Beyonc? just can?t be bothered with getting into it). I like minor chords and such?though I?m not sure exactly what they are. Anyway, if hearing 27 renditions of ?Santa Baby? makes you wince, then go enjoy Trans-Siberian Orchestra. You won?t hear some girl who thinks she?s hot belting out that lame song.

That?s all for this weekend, readers. Lay off the eggnog and have a great weekend.

Microsoft signs deal with China Unicom to push Windows Phone

It?s no secret that China is an important market both for Microsoft and Nokia. These two companies are pinning their hopes on the world?s largest market to finally have a breakthrough with Windows Phone 8. It was only three days ago that Nokia launched the Lumia 920T on China Mobile, the world?s largest carrier with over 700 million subscribers, to try and undercut Apple's iPhone.

Now, according to TechCrunch, Microsoft has signed a deal with China Unicom, the world's third largest mobile carrier and a fierce competitor with China Mobile. This deal will further push distribution of the Windows Phone platform. According to this report Microsoft will ramp up technical support as well as allocate more funds for promotional material in China. Kevin Turner, Microsoft?s COO talked about the new deal at a news briefing in Beijing:

China is the No 1 market worldwide in terms of PC, tablet, mobile and Internet users. It is a very exciting place. We believe there is a great opportunity across the country to provide new business models to partners, new technologies to developers and best services to customers.

Is Microsoft doing the right thing going after such a big market or should they try and stay closer to home?
