UFC 146 set after Roy Nelson vs. Gabriel Gonzaga added

The UFC 146 dominoes have finally stopped falling, as the all-heavyweight main card is set. Roy Nelson will face Gabriel Gonzaga and Shane Del Rosario will fight Stipe Miocic.

The shake-up started on Friday, when Alistair Overeem withdrew from the title bout with Junior dos Santos after a pre-fight test showed elevated levels of testosterone. Overeem said he wanted time to resolve the issue with the Nevada Athletic Commission, but that left dos Santos without an opponent and UFC 146 without a main event.

Frank Mir stepped into the title fight, Antonio Silva was given the bout with Cain Velasquez, Nelson got Gonzaga, and Miocic, who was not originally on the card, stepped up to fight Del Rosario.

What do you think of the updates to the card? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Peter Chernin?s Media Group Picks Up $200M From Providence, Others; Will Announce First Deals ?Within Weeks? [Yahoo Won't Be Among Them]

moneyA sign of more big money being poured into the tech sector, by way of a new development for the Chernin Group, the digital media company founded by ex-News Corp. executive Peter Chernin: it has sold a minority stake to a group of investors led by Providence Equity Partners, reportedly for $200 million. The Chernin Group, which has invested in a number of hot online properties including Tumblr and Flipboard, says that the deal gives it the financial muscle to go after "any deal of any size" anywhere in the world, according to a report in the FT. The deals will focus on media assets, and will span the range from incubator investments through to later-stage funding rounds. The first investments will be announced "within weeks."

Video: Sanford police chief to resign

>>> we begin this half-hour with news out of sanford, florida. police chief bill lee will resign from his post effective midnight tonight. the move comes a month after he temporarily stepped aside after the nationwide protest involving the trayvon martin shooting. kerry, what's the latest there?

>> reporter: the chief will make the announcement or the city will at 4:00 here today. the chief had been on the job for ten months. it was his department that investigated initially the shooting that took place here in sanford late in february. now, the police department at the time as they investigated made a recommendation, we believe, because a lot of this was still locked up in documents. but made a recommendation to the state attorney's office to bring charges. but it was the state attorney's office that decided they could not bring charges based on florida's stand your ground law. the chief got caught up in the turmoil here. he stepped aside. he is a veteran of law enforcement . before he join as the chief. here, he was a deputy with the sheriff's department for 20 years here in this county so he is a known quantity. but the turmoil ensued. he stepped down. and now he is going to step away from this job completely today. effective, we're told, by the city at midnight tonight. meantime, trayvon martin's family is dealing with the release of george zimmerman from the jail here. george zimmerman just around, shortly after midnight. posted his $150,000 bond. exited the jail wearing a bullet-proof vest. there are concerns among his family and lawyers that he is a target which is evidenced by some of the death threats that we've even seen popping up on twitter. the attorneys representing trayvon martin's family say that they respect the law that allows somebody who is not convicted of a crime to be released on bond but it doesn't mean they like it.

>> a heavy heart. they had to watch the killer of their son be released from jail last night. they would rather he had stayed in jail until the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.

>> reporter: the trayvon martin family is remaining relatively quiet today. meantime, the attorneys representing george zimmerman will not say where he is. won't even say whether he has left the state or not. they say that their paramount concern is his safety.

>> do we know any more about the timing? why it came down today?

>> reporter: we don't know why it came down today but it would be possible that we're beginning to see some of the court documents being released here. now what actually was released was quite minimal. mostly procedural documents. but there will be more documents and specifically everything associate with their investigation. and maybe there's something in there that is something that he doesn't want to answer questions for. i don't know. we don't have it. we're beginning to see that develop today.

Lane Garrison Slapping Ashley Mattingly: Caught on Tape!

A new surveillance video obtained by TMZ shows Lane Garrison slapping Ashley Mattingly across the face after he waited for her outside her apartment.

Lane was arrested for domestic violence Saturday, but denied hitting his ex, saying he put his hands on Ashley's shoulders, put her in a chair, and left.

Not exactly the case, according to the surveillance video:

The former Prison Break star claimed that he ran into his ex while visiting someone else's apartment, too ... but he appears to be sitting outside waiting for her.

When Ashley drives into the building's garage, Lane is seen stumbling as he runs after her. They are then seen walking into the building together.

Clearly arguing as they get into an elevator, Ashley seems to be asking Lane to leave, but when he refuses, she gets off ... and all hell breaks loose.

In the apartment lobby outside the elevator, Lane is seen grabbing Ashley's arm with his left hand ... and then slapping her face with his right.

After a few more seconds of struggling, Lane bolts. He can then be seen throwing what may be Ashley's phone into the street, then leaving for good.

Garrison was arrested for felony domestic violence and is being held on $50,000 bail. He is on a parole hold because of his manslaughter conviction.

With just six days left on his parole (he killed a teenager in a DUI five years ago), he could face additional prison time based on this arrest.

It remains to be seen if he will face charges from this in the long run, but his initial defense certainly isn't helped by what the video shows.

Larry vs. Larry

A San Francisco courtroom is presently the center ring in the worldwide tech IP litigation circus. While other legal battles over mobile device patents and copyrights are as down and dirty as ever in places like Germany, Australia, and elsewhere in the U.S., the fight between Oracle and Google over the alleged theft of Java technologies stands out due to its cast of characters.

ICQ Messenger 3.1 (for Android)

With ICQ Messenger 3.1 (free), ICQ, the pioneering instant messaging (IM) desktop client from the mid-90s, is attempting to reinvent itself as a mobile app. Like Whatsapp and Viber, ICQ Messenger lets you send free, unlimited text and photo messages to your contacts. It also streams updates from a few social networking feeds. As a result, ICQ Messenger is half IM, half social media aggregator, and neither half works particularly well.

For the uninitiated, ICQ (a play on "I seek you") was the first instant messaging (IM) platform to really take off when it launched in 1996. It vanished just as quickly once competitors like AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and Google Talk entered the scene, and was eventually snapped up by AOL in 1998 before being sold to Digital Sky for less than half the price AOL paid for it, in 2010.

Clumsy Setup
After registering, you can import your contacts from your ?Android address book, Facebook, Google Talk, StudiVZ (a German Facebook clone), and ICQ. The app opens your browser to log into these third-party networks, which feels very archaic. Most multi-client messengers these days let you sign in within the app. ?

Connecting to Facebook and Google took minutes, which feels like a lifetime in an app. Furthermore I couldn't select individual contacts from my social networks to add, I could only import entire network lists. I mean, I follow more than 500 people on Twitter, but I certainly don't want to import them all!

If someone in your contact list isn't on Facebook or Twitter?like my mom, for instance?the only action you can take is to invite him or her to join ICQ first, before you can send another message. The same goes for Whatsapp, but Whatsapp is already so popular that you?re bound to find a good portion of your contact list already on there.

None of my phone contacts were on ICQ, so I created another ICQ account to communicate with myself in the Android app.

Quick, Free Messaging
ICQ Messenger delivers messages instantly. The messaging interface is very slick, featuring the same bright color scheme as in the original ICQ. In the Android app, you can send your geolocation or a photo as well.

Like with Google Talk, ICQ Messenger works cross-platform, so users can message each other through either mobile or PC clients. And yes, when you receive an ICQ message through your Android device, you do hear "uh oh!" However, the familiar sound alert was given an echo treatment and now sounds? sultry.

You can send messages to non-ICQ contacts using the app, but they're delivered via the same platform from which you imported the contacts. In other words, if you added Calvin, Susie, and Hobbes to your ICQ list through Facebook, messages you send them will only be delivered to their Facebook message inbox. Same goes for Google Talk.

On the other hand, if a non-ICQ contact initiates a message, ICQ Messenger does not reflect this.

RSS Feeds
The app's home screen features four tabs, two of which I wouldn't use regularly: Contacts, Chats, Feeds, My Info. The first two are self-explanatory to anyone who's used an instant messaging app. Contacts lists all your contacts, Chats lists all your chats (history included).

Feeds, on the other hand, is an RSS of all updates across your integrated social networks. It's similar to Hootsuite?except to a much lesser extent since ICQ only supports Facebook, Google Talk, and that German Facebook. You can only "like" or comment on updates. Furthermore, scrolling gets jerky the further down you go.?

When you tap the My Info tab you can see Notifications (like if someone comments on your status) and My Updates, which is a list of your own status updates. ?This whole tab felt like an incredible waste of one-fourth of the app's interface.

Fun For Nostalgia's Sake
ICQ Messenger for Android is a fast, free mobile messenger, but like that vintage typewriter you keep for nostalgia's sake, it's more quaint that useful. Whatsapp and Viber do a much better job of importing contacts. Furthermore, few people in the U.S. actively use ICQ anymore, so the app's utility is limited to messaging your Facebook and Google Talk friends. You?ll find superior social media aggregators in Hootsuite and Seesmic. ICQ Messenger for Android has a lot of potential design-wise, and will appeal to sentimentalists like myself, but until more people join there are better instant messaging apps out there.

January 2012 Image:

SCREENING STATS
During my 30-year practice of diagnostic radiology, I spent many hours educating physicians and surgeons on the importance of false positives and false negatives in the diagnostic process. No diagnostic test is 100 percent accurate. My mantra was always: don?t treat initial test results. Always confirm the diagnosis with other independent data before performing surgery or prescribing pharmaceuticals with serious side effects.

I applaud the general theme of mathematician John Allen Paulos in ?Weighing the Positives? [Advances]. First he makes the valid argument that medical tests will be positive for some patients without disease. He then illustrates this with a statistical analysis of mammography on one million patients, resulting in 9,960 false positives. He makes a monumental error, however, in stating, ?If the 9,960 healthy people are subjected to harmful treatments ranging from surgery to chemotherapy to radiation, the net benefit of the tests might very well be negative.?

Because mammography, prostate-specific antigen levels and all other initial testing for common cancers are merely screening tests, no patient ever receives definitive treatment for cancer before these tests are confirmed by a biopsy. Cynical health care watchdogs may cite this as excessive testing, but such measures avoid the negative effects of overtreatment that Paulos invokes.

PREDICTIVE PREJUDICE
In ?The Department of Pre-Crime,? James Vlahos mentions the potential danger of prejudging individuals by using predictive policing techniques but avoids discussion of a more serious potential consequence of such ?crime forecasting?: the positive-feedback reinforcement of existing biases to more deeply criminalize certain populations and deepen injustice.

If police are already focusing on and arresting in some neighborhoods over others, feeding information into the machine may result in still greater police presence, more arrests, more predicted crime, still more police presence and still more arrests. If the initial bias is for factors other than actual crime, the result may be the deepening of injustice, not a reduction of crime.
The racial, ethnic and financial divides in crime and justice in the U.S. are well documented. The most obvious examples are in the discrepancies in drug laws, where the use of ?crack? cocaine gets far more serious penalties than the powdered version, with the meaningful difference being that crack is used primarily in black communities.

African-Americans are perhaps eight times more likely to be incarcerated than whites. Poor people are much more likely to be convicted and sent to prison than wealthier people. Young people in poorer, nonwhite neighborhoods have a much different experience with respect to the police than whites. They are probably more likely to get a criminal record than their white counterparts in wealthier communities who engage in the same behaviors.

Once into the criminal system, people can lose their right to vote, have their reputations and futures tainted, and have reduced access to jobs. They are, in a sense, trained to continue and pass on a more criminal culture.

OVERRATED DOWN UNDER?
Although the gist of the ?The Coming Mega Drought? [Forum]?Peter H. Gleick and Matthew Heberger?s essay on the possibility of Australia?s Millennium Drought being repeated in the southwestern U.S.?rings true, the comments praising Australia?s response to its drought need a bit of context. There is unfortunately a political aversion to human reuse of water in Australia. (I have heard a specific put-down: ?Would you like to drink poo water??) The $13.2 billion being spent by the country?s five largest cities to add to desalination capacity is extremely wasteful as the same end can possibly be achieved by treatment and reuse. Desalination is also energy-intensive.
